The Union Plus Free College Benefit, brought to you in partnership with AFSCME, can help you (and your family members) afford a college education without piling on thousands of dollars in student debt.
Under an academic partnership with Eastern Gateway Community College, the Union Plus Free College Benefit offers grants — known as “last dollar scholarships” — that fill the gap between any federal, state and employer education grants for tuition, fees, and e-books for certain online programs at Eastern Gateway.
Free College is possible thanks to the early support and enthusiasm of AFSCME, who entered into a collaboration with Eastern Gateway Community College in 2016. Since 2016, thousands of students have taken advantage of millions of dollars in Free College scholarships.
Earn an Associate Degree — completely online, for FREE! Even if you don’t qualify for student financial aid, the Union Plus Free College Benefit will be applied to your balance for tuition, fees and e-books.
Eastern Gateway Community College is a fully accredited, non-profit public institution that is part of the University System of Ohio. Students can enroll in the distance learning program from anywhere in the U.S. The program offers seven associate degrees and two certificate programs. Credits can be transferred to a four-year college.

CWA Members: In response to your questions, CWA inquired about the status of the day after Thanksgiving. Governor Murphy will not be signing an Executive Order to close the State of NJ this Friday for non-essential employees. We are sharing this information so all members are aware.
While it has been 10 years since a Governor has closed on the day after Thanksgiving, we disagree with this decision. We had hoped that members would be able to enjoy time with their families without the use of personal leave time. We have discussed with the Governor’s office, and we expect Departments will soon be notified, that requests for time off will be granted as liberally as possible.
Although we have never before had the day after Thanksgiving off as part of our Contract, we will bring this matter up at the bargaining table. However, we continue to believe that the day after Thanksgiving should be a day when the State is closed as a matter of policy and are unwilling to trade any of our existing holidays for this day.
We wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe holiday.
EDIT: as of 11/26/18: our meeting has been cancelled for the Education & Equity Committee. Please visit our website/facebook for updates and announcements for when we can reschedule.
